What is a Guru?

Pujya Gurudev Swami Chinmayanada ji

Not all can be called a Guru…

In Sanskrit, "Guru" (गुरु) means "teacher" or "master." The word is derived from the roots "gu" (गु), meaning "darkness" or "ignorance," and "ru" (रु), meaning "dispeller" or "remover." Thus, a Guru is one who dispels the darkness of ignorance and brings enlightenment and wisdom. The importance of a Guru in knowledge transmission is much more than we can imagine:

  • Guidance: Gurus provide personalized guidance, helping students navigate their spiritual and educational journeys.

  • Wisdom: They impart not just academic knowledge but also life wisdom and moral values.

  • Inspiration: Gurus inspire and motivate students to achieve their highest potential.

  • Tradition: They preserve and transmit ancient traditions, teachings, and practices, ensuring continuity and authenticity.

  • Transformation: Through their teachings, Gurus facilitate personal and spiritual transformation, leading to self-realization and enlightenment.

  • In essence, the Guru is a Self realised master, the vital link between the student and the deeper truths of life, guiding them towards greater understanding and self-awareness. This website and our lives are a dedication to `Guru Parampara’.
